A wiki is a system where many people can work on structured information. Think of it as a very easy way to create a set of webpages, where anyone can edit any page.
To be able to create or edit pages, you need to be registered as a user at xda-developers.com. If you are not registered as a user then go to http://forum.xda-developers.com and click 'register' in the menu on the top of the page. Once you're logged in to the forum, you will automatically also be logged in here. If you have an xda-developers account but aren't logged in, simply click the 'sign in' link on the bottom of this page.
The WikiHomePage describes how it all works, but you're highly likely to figure this one out without a manual.

If you're having trouble using the site's builtin search function (for 2-3 letter acronyms like ROM/IPL/OS etc. - NUMBER 2), one method around this is to use an external search engine like Google:
(To narrow your search to our site, just include "site:xda-developers.com" along with your other search criteria. i.e. search for "site:xda-developers.com AKU 3.2" without the quotes. obviously this doesn't solve everything, but searches are at least more useful than before.)
Search Plug In:
There is a search plug in, to do searches on the XDA side directly from your browser search bar.
This plug in works in Internet Explorer 7 and up, and in ?FireFox 2 and up.
